A Quiet Lifeline in Sudbury The Story of Number 72

In the heart of Sudbury, Suffolk, sits a small charity making a big difference. Number 72 isn’t just a building on North Street — it’s a warm, welcoming space where anyone going through a difficult time can find help, hope, and someone to talk to. Whether you’re a parent needing guidance, someone dealing with grief, or just looking for a safe place to sit with a cup of tea, Number 72 opens its doors to offer support without judgement.

For over a decade, this community-driven charity has quietly supported families and individuals with practical advice, emotional encouragement, and a listening ear. As the world becomes more complicated and isolating, spaces like this matter more than ever.

About Number 72

Number 72 is a Sudbury-based charity offering a calm, confidential space where people of all ages can access emotional and practical support. Whether someone is coping with grief, struggling with self-esteem, or simply needs a listening ear, the team at Number 72 is there to help — without judgement or pressure.

Their approach is simple but powerful: make people feel safe, heard, and valued. The team includes trained staff and volunteers with experience supporting children, young people, and families through challenges like bereavement, anxiety, anger management, and parenting.

Based at 72 North Street, the space is welcoming and inclusive — not clinical or intimidating. It’s somewhere you can grab a coffee, browse useful resources, join a course, or just have a quiet chat with someone who cares.

Support Starts with a conversation

What They Said About Operation Santa

Number 72 was one of the charities supported by Operation Santa — and here’s what they had to say:

“We really appreciate the support and funding from Operation Santa. It has enabled us to provide more targeted support to local children and families who need it most. Thank you for believing in the work we do.”

If you’re part of a Suffolk-based charity and could use a little extra help to keep doing what you do best, we’d love to hear from you. Visit our Grants Page to find out how we might be able to support your work too.

A quiet space. A warm welcome. Every time.

More Than Just Coffee

Step through the door at Number 72, and you’ll find more than a cup of tea — you’ll find community. The coffee shop is open from Tuesday to Thursday, 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, and offers a welcoming, judgement-free space to sit, chat, and breathe.

Some visitors come for company, others for quiet. And for those who need it, there’s always someone available for a private chat — no pressure, no forms, just real conversation with someone who’s there to listen.

This gentle, everyday setting is part of what makes Number 72 so special. It’s support that feels natural, not clinical.

Wellbeing Wednesdays

On Wednesday mornings, something quietly wonderful happens at Number 72. The kettle’s on, the craft table is out, and the room fills with gentle conversation, creativity, and connection.

These drop-in sessions run during term time from 9:30 to 12:30 and are completely free. There’s no need to book, no expectations, just a warm space where people come together to knit, paint, or make cards — and often end up laughing, sharing stories, or supporting each other through whatever life has thrown their way.

It’s not really about the crafts. It’s about belonging.

Learning To Cope together

Learning to Cope, Together

Some challenges in life don’t come with a manual — but Number 72 offers the next best thing. Through their short courses and workshops, they help people navigate the tricky parts of parenting, grief, self-esteem, and more.

These aren’t lectures or therapy sessions. They’re honest, supportive spaces led by people who understand. Whether it’s helping a young person process bereavement in school, or guiding a parent through the ups and downs of family life, the goal is always the same — to make people feel more confident, more capable, and a little less alone.

Everything is done with care, at a pace that works for each group.

Creativity That Gives Back

Walk past Number 72 and you’ll often find something eye-catching in the window — a handmade gift, a colourful craft, or a seasonal display that stops people in their tracks.

Inside, there’s a growing collection of creative items available to buy. Many are made by volunteers or participants in the craft sessions, and every purchase helps support the work of the charity. It’s a small but meaningful way for the community to give back — and for people to feel proud of what they’ve created.

Buying a gift here means more than just picking up something pretty. It means helping someone feel seen, supported, and valued.

The People Behind the Support

What makes Number 72 special isn’t just the services they offer. It’s the people. Every staff member and volunteer brings warmth, empathy, and a genuine desire to help.

Many have personal or professional experience with the issues people face — things like loss, anxiety, or parenting challenges. They’re not here to judge or tell anyone what to do. They’re here to listen, support, and walk alongside people as they figure things out.

Everyone is DBS checked and trained to work with children, young people, and families. But more importantly, they care. And that’s something you feel the moment you walk through the door.

How You Can Help

Number 72 is a small charity with a big heart — and like all small charities, they rely on the kindness of others to keep going.

There are lots of ways you can get involved. You might have a few hours a week to volunteer. You might be able to offer a donation, big or small. Or maybe you could simply help spread the word, so more people know this kind of support exists right here in Sudbury.

Every bit of help makes a difference. Every conversation, every shared post, every pound raised helps keep the doors open and the kettle on for someone who might really need it.
